US Thanksgiving in Hillsdale and Hudson NY

US Thanksgiving in Hillsdale and Hudson NY

Once again we visited family (Rob and Susan) during the US Thanksgiving long weekend, and when not gorging ourselves on delicious turkey and trimmings, we wandered through both the hamlet of Hillsdale and the picturesque town of Hudson, on the banks of the river by the same name. And for the 2nd time, I brought the Tachihara 4X5 camera along. Last year, I had just acquired the camera, so it was all new to me.  And while I have not shot as much 4X5 this past year as I would have liked, I am no longer struggling to figure out the workflow. So only screw up maybe 20 percent of the time 😊

All of these pictures were shot on CatLABS X Film 80 MKII, at 80 ISO, and developed in Rodinal at 1:50 for 9 minutes.

The first stop when we visit is always the fantastic bookstore in Hillsdale, the Book Barn. I’ve been photographing the book barn for many years, this time in full sun midday:

Interesting connection between the Book Barn and the Tachihara camera. There are always great finds at the book barn, and photography books invariably outnumber the others I buy.  This year, I scored another copy of “The Camera”, the first book in the “New Ansel Adams Photography Series,” the 1980 edition, and Ken Rockwell was right in his review of the camera: this edition of the book has a picture of the Tachihara on page 32!

The hamlet has very interesting architecture, including the recently restored town hall. This Colonial Revival-style building had previously been the library:

The Roe Jan Brewing Company, housed in a building dating back to 1851, which was built to house the Hillsdale Mercantile Association:

The Home Chef store, in a restored Gothic Revival 1870s house, the Thomas & Adelia Hayes House:

A bit of a light leak on this photo, but it still captures the essence of the Mount Washington House, built as a hotel in 1881, to welcome tourists visiting from New York City:

Lunch and a wander through the historic core of the town of Hudson was the plan for Saturday, with a chance to photograph some of that town’s interesting architecture.  First stop, Hudson City Hall, just across the street from where we had lunch (Baba Louie’s):

The old firehouse on Warren Street:

I liked this doorway on a building along Warren:

A view of the Hudson River in the late afternoon, the view from Promenade Hill Park, with the Hudson Athens Lighthouse (1874) in the distance:

Susan snapped a picture on her phone of me messing with the Techihara:

Back in Hillsdale, the tree in front of Rob and Susan’s house:

and finally, a sheet of film got jammed in the film holder, but I developed it anyway:
