Washington DC, Feb 2023

I will bounce back and forth a little on the blog, sharing past photos, and occasionally posting pictures from film just recently shot.  For this post, here are photos that I recently received back from the lab, developed and scanned by Canadian Film Lab.

Business brought me to Washington DC in February.  Always nice to leave home in the middle of winter weather and head to somewhere snow boots are not required.

A lot of snow clearing happening prior to departure...

All these shots were taken with my Nikon F4, a camera much like the Hasselblad in that it was a camera that I coveted for a very long time, and recently acquired. I will publish a more fulsome post on the Nikon later.  For this trip, to save having to check luggage, I travelled light, bringing a single lens with me, a 50mm f1.8 prime. The film used was Ilford FP5 Plus, 400 ISO, shot at box speed.

Having spent many years working on security issues, security is one of the things I am always conscious of.  Here are some examples of active vs passive security measures, both can be found throughout DC.

You can't visit Washington with a camera without taking pictures of the White Houses, right? Again, security is evident. For years, Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House has been closed to vehicular traffic, and barriers to block foot traffic are always at the ready.

For decades, there have been protestors in front of the White House, including apparently an anti-nuclear peace vigil, 24/7, for 41 years.

The city is dotted with parks, squares and circles, which are dotted with statues, and now, also dotted with encampments, homeless in tents in many parks across the city. Here is a recent article about the National Park Service clearing the encampment at McPherson Square.

Following my time in Washington, I travelled to San Diego with the Nikon, and will publish some of those pictures in an upcoming post.
